TopAV buying advice
Is the SMART MX255-V5-5A right for your classroom?
For small teaching rooms where more than one pupil works on the board at a time.
Shortlist the 55-inch MX for a small classroom, a SEND or intervention room, a library corner or a breakout space where the board sits close to the group. It is the smallest panel in the series, so measure the furthest seat first: a standard classroom almost always reads better on the 75-inch MX275-V5. This size also uses a 300 cd/m2 panel and plain anti-glare glass rather than the brighter, optically bonded glass on the larger sizes, so a room with strong daylight is worth checking before you commit.
Reasons to shortlist it
- HyPr Touch with Advanced IR tracks up to 50 touch points and tells pen, finger and eraser apart at the same time, with 1 mm accuracy, a 2 mm minimum object size and a typical touch response under 5 ms, so two or three pupils can write and wipe together.
- The iQ system runs the lesson without a laptop on 8GB of DDR4 memory and 64GB of storage, expandable to 576GB with a microSD card, and the Google Play Store is available on a Google Play Protect Certified build.
- Four HDMI 2.1 inputs (one front, three rear) plus a front USB-C carrying video, touch and 27W of charge and a rear USB-C at 65W, so a visiting laptop and a fixed PC can both stay connected.
- Two 15W speakers and a linear six-microphone array with onboard echo cancellation handle lesson audio and video calls, and the built-in NFC reader plus the two SMART ID cards in the box let staff tap to sign in to their own profile.
- We are a SMART Platinum partner, so warranty claims and replacements go through us rather than a queue.
Check before you choose
- 55 inches is the smallest panel in the series and uses a 300 cd/m2 panel against 400 cd/m2 on the 65, 75 and 86-inch sizes, with plain anti-glare glass rather than the optically bonded glass used on those sizes. In a bright room or a normal-depth classroom, compare it against the 75-inch MX275-V5 before ordering.
- Budget separately for the mount, installation and any Windows OPS module, camera or Tool Explorer accessory kit. The box holds the display, two pens, a remote with batteries, the antennas, two SMART ID cards, a power cable, a 5m USB A to B cable and a 1.8m USB-C cable.
- The front USB-C port delivers 27W, which is enough for a small notebook but not for a laptop that expects 60W or more; that machine will still need its own charger, or the 65W rear USB-C port. Confirm Android version, Google or Microsoft account policy and any 802.1X network requirements with your IT team before rollout.
See the 55" on your wall, to scale
On a phone, point your camera at the wall and see the 55" there at its real size. On a computer, upload a photo of the wall (or scan the QR code to take one with your phone and it will appear here) and drag the display around it to scale.
Not sure 55" is the right size for the room? The screen size calculator shows how far a 55" display carries for presentations, touch work and video.
What to plan before installing the MX255-V5-5A
01
Size & sightlines
Measure the longest viewing distance and the smallest text pupils need to read. At 55 inches the board needs to be close to the group, so check the back row against the 75-inch model before you settle.
02
Mount & connections
Check wall construction, mounting height, a mains socket and a data point. The panel weighs 32kg, and a height-adjustable mount lets younger pupils reach the lower part of the writing area. SMART lists a 400 x 400 mm (M8) VESA pattern.
03
Software & installation
Decide whether lessons run on the built-in iQ system or a connected laptop, and confirm SMART Notebook, account sign-in and app licences with your IT team. Tell us if you need mounting, cabling, a camera or an OPS PC module.
Display price is for the panel. Installation and optional equipment are quoted separately. Purchase-order terms are available to approved education customers.
Build a quote you can compare
Include these details in your project enquiry so the quote covers the room as well as the screen.
- Number of displays, site postcode and required date.
- Furthest viewing distance and available wall space.
- Wall type, fixed mount or adjustable trolley, and cable routes.
- Laptop model, teaching apps, and any camera or Windows PC needs.
Ask for separate equipment, delivery, installation and licence costs, with a total including VAT. Confirm warranty coverage and any registration requirements before placing the order.

SMART MX255-V5-5A questions answered
Who is the SMART Board MX255-V5 best suited to?
Consider it for a small classroom, an intervention or SEND room, or a breakout space where pupils sit close to the board. It is the 55-inch size in the MX series, so check that text is readable from the furthest seat; a standard-depth classroom usually needs the 75-inch MX275-V5 instead.
Does the MX255-V5 need a computer to work?
No. The iQ system is built into the display, with a digital whiteboard, web browser, screen sharing and the Google Play Store, so it runs lessons on its own. A laptop connects over USB-C or HDMI when you want to teach from your own files, and a SMART PCM module can be fitted in the rear OPS slot for a fixed Windows PC.
How many people can use it at once?
SMART lists up to 50 touch points, depending on the operating system in use, with pen, finger and eraser told apart at the same time. On a 55-inch panel that realistically means two or three pupils writing side by side rather than a whole group.
Can I connect a laptop with a single USB-C cable?
Yes, with a caveat about power. The front USB-C port carries video, touch data and 27W of power delivery, and the rear USB-C port carries 65W. A laptop that draws more than the port supplies will charge slowly or need its own mains adapter, and your laptop and cable must support DisplayPort over USB-C.
Is the 55-inch screen as bright as the larger MX models?
No. SMART lists 300 cd/m2 for the 55-inch and 400 cd/m2 for the 65, 75 and 86-inch sizes. The larger sizes also use optically bonded glass, which the 55-inch does not, so a room with strong daylight or large windows is worth checking on site.
How much memory and storage does it have?
8GB of DDR4 memory and 64GB of storage, expandable to 576GB with a microSD card in the rear slot, as listed on SMART's MX (V5) specification sheet.
What sound and microphone hardware is built in?
Two 15W speakers and a linear six-microphone array with onboard acoustic echo cancellation. That covers lesson playback and video calls in a small room without a separate soundbar, though a large or acoustically poor space may still want additional audio.
Does it include a camera, a Windows PC or the Tool Explorer kit?
Treat all three as separate items. SMART lists the Ultra HD Camera 120, its PCM OPS modules and the MultiStylus with Tool Explorer kit as optional accessories, and the display's rear OPS slot and USB ports are there to take them. Ask for a quote that names the camera, PC module, accessory kit and mount you need.
What power does the MX255-V5 draw?
SMART lists 72W typical for the 55-inch size and 0.2W in standby, and the display carries ENERGY STAR and EPEAT listings. The larger sizes in the series draw more, so use the figure for the size you are actually buying when you plan circuits.
Can TopAV quote for installation and school purchase orders?
Yes. Request a project quote for mounting, cabling and installation, which is quoted separately from the display. Approved education customers can apply for purchase-order terms; eligibility and credit terms are subject to approval.
