TopAV buying advice
Is the SMART RX265-5A right for your classroom?
For compact rooms where pupils sit close to the board.
Shortlist the 65-inch RX for small group rooms, intervention and SEND spaces, and narrow classrooms where the furthest seat is only a few metres from the glass. It carries the same 3840 x 2160 resolution, 50-point touch, Tool Explorer tools and ports as the larger RX sizes, so the only thing you give up is panel area. Measure the longest viewing distance first: in a full-size classroom the 75-inch model usually reads better from the back.
Reasons to shortlist it
- HyPr Touch with Advanced IR tracks up to 50 touch points and tells pen, finger and eraser apart at the same time, so a group can write, wipe and drag objects together without the board switching tools.
- Tool Explorer (V2) recognises physical stamps and cubes placed on the glass, which gives early-years and SEND lessons a hands-on way to use the board rather than a menu.
- One front USB-C cable carries video, touch and 65W of charge to a teacher's laptop; a second 65W USB-C at the rear suits a fixed PC and a 15W top port powers a camera.
- Two 20W speakers with a 15W subwoofer and an eight-microphone array with echo cancellation, so lesson audio and video calls need no separate soundbar or microphone.
- We are a SMART Platinum partner, so warranty claims and replacements go through us rather than a queue.
Check before you choose
- 65 inches is the smallest panel in the RX range. In a full-size classroom the back row will struggle with small text, marked-up worksheets and detailed diagrams, so check the longest viewing distance against the 75-inch model before ordering.
- Budget separately for the mount, installation and any Windows OPS module or camera. The box holds the display, two styluses, two erasers and cables, not a PC.
- The Android version varies by build: units may ship on Android 13 and update over the air. Confirm the installed version, Google account policies and app licences with your IT team before rollout.
See the 65" on your wall, to scale
On a phone, point your camera at the wall and see the 65" there at its real size. On a computer, upload a photo of the wall (or scan the QR code to take one with your phone and it will appear here) and drag the display around it to scale.
Not sure 65" is the right size for the room? The screen size calculator shows how far a 65" display carries for presentations, touch work and video.
What to plan before installing the RX265-5A
01
Size & sightlines
Measure the longest viewing distance and the smallest text people need to read. 65 inches works where seating is close; step up a size if the room is deep.
02
Mount & connections
Check wall construction, mounting height, power and data. A height-adjustable mount lets younger pupils reach the writing area. SMART lists a 600 x 400 mm (M8) VESA pattern.
03
Software & installation
Decide whether lessons run on the built-in iQ system or a connected laptop, and confirm SMART Notebook and account sign-in with your IT team. Tell us if you need mounting, cabling or a camera.
Display price is for the panel. Installation and optional equipment are quoted separately. Purchase-order terms are available to approved education customers.
Build a quote you can compare
Include these details in your project enquiry so the quote covers the room as well as the screen.
- Number of displays, site postcode and required date.
- Furthest viewing distance and available wall space.
- Wall type, fixed mount or adjustable trolley, and cable routes.
- Laptop model, teaching apps, and any camera or Windows PC needs.
Ask for separate equipment, delivery, installation and licence costs, with a total including VAT. Confirm warranty coverage and any registration requirements before placing the order.

SMART RX265-5A questions answered
Who is the SMART Board RX265 best suited to?
Consider it for a small or narrow teaching space where pupils sit close to the board, such as a group room, an intervention room or a SEND space. It gives you the full RX feature set in the smallest panel in the range, so choose it on room size rather than on specification.
Is 65 inches big enough for a classroom?
It depends on your longest viewing distance, not on the number of pupils. Measure from the furthest seat and check the smallest text you expect people to read from there. A compact or narrow room is usually fine on 65 inches; a standard full-size classroom with a deep back row normally reads better on the 75-inch model.
Does the RX need a computer to work?
No. The iQ system is built into the display, with a whiteboard, browser, screen sharing and the Google Play Store, so it runs lessons on its own. A laptop connects over USB-C or HDMI when you want to teach from your own files, and a Windows OPS module can be fitted in the rear slot for a fixed PC.
Can I connect a laptop with a single USB-C cable?
Yes. The front USB-C port carries video, touch data and up to 65W of power delivery, so one cable connects and charges most laptops. Your laptop and cable must support DisplayPort over USB-C; a laptop needing more than 65W may still need its own charger.
What is Tool Explorer?
Tool Explorer is SMART's object recognition on the RX. The supplied styluses select colours and the erasers work by orientation, and optional stamps and cubes are recognised when placed on the glass, so younger pupils can use physical tools rather than on-screen menus. Stamps and cubes are optional accessories.
How many people can use the RX265 at once?
SMART lists up to 50 touch points, depending on the operating system in use, with pen, finger and eraser told apart at the same time. On a 65-inch panel the practical limit is how many pupils can stand comfortably along the width rather than the touch system itself.
How much power does the RX265 draw?
94W typical in use and under 0.5W on standby, which is the lowest of the three RX sizes. Plan a standard 100V to 240V socket behind the mount position rather than a spur.
Does it include a camera or a Windows PC?
Treat both as separate items. SMART lists its Ultra HD camera and PCM OPS modules as optional accessories, and the display's top USB-C port and rear OPS slot are there to take them. Ask for a quote that names the camera, PC module and mount you need rather than assuming they are included.
Which version of Android does the RX run?
SMART's UK page says units may ship on Android 13 and update to a later version over the air, and the system takes automatic updates in service. Confirm the version installed on your delivery with us if a particular app or policy depends on it.
How much memory and storage does the RX265 have?
8GB of DDR4 memory and 64GB of storage, expandable to 576GB with a microSD card, as listed on SMART's specification sheet. That is the same as the larger RX sizes.
