TopAV buying advice

Is the SMART RX286-5A right for your classroom?

For large rooms where the back row still has to read the board.

Shortlist the 86-inch RX for deep upper-school classrooms, halls, lecture rooms and any space where pupils sit well back from the board. It shares the 3840 x 2160 resolution, 50-point touch, Tool Explorer tools and ports with the smaller RX sizes, so the extra size buys legibility at distance rather than extra detail. Check the wall and the delivery route before ordering: this is the largest and heaviest panel in the range.

Reasons to shortlist it

  • HyPr Touch with Advanced IR tracks up to 50 touch points and tells pen, finger and eraser apart at the same time, and the extra width of an 86-inch panel gives a group room to write, wipe and drag objects side by side.
  • Tool Explorer (V2) recognises physical stamps and cubes placed on the glass, which gives early-years and SEND lessons a hands-on way to use the board rather than a menu.
  • One front USB-C cable carries video, touch and 65W of charge to a teacher's laptop; a second 65W USB-C at the rear suits a fixed PC and a 15W top port powers a camera.
  • Two 20W speakers with a 15W subwoofer and an eight-microphone array with echo cancellation, so a large room gets lesson audio and video calls without a separate soundbar or microphone.
  • We are a SMART Platinum partner, so warranty claims and replacements go through us rather than a queue.

Check before you choose

  • 86 inches needs clear wall width, a solid fixing and a way in. Check the wall construction, confirm the panel and its pallet will pass the doors, lifts and corridors on the delivery route, and plan a multi-person lift or a lifting aid on the day.
  • Budget separately for the mount, installation and any Windows OPS module or camera. The box holds the display, two styluses, two erasers and cables, not a PC, and the mount must be rated for this size rather than carried over from a smaller board.
  • The Android version varies by build: units may ship on Android 13 and update over the air. Confirm the installed version, Google account policies and app licences with your IT team before rollout.

See the 86" on your wall, to scale

On a phone, point your camera at the wall and see the 86" there at its real size. On a computer, upload a photo of the wall (or scan the QR code to take one with your phone and it will appear here) and drag the display around it to scale.

Not sure 86" is the right size for the room? The screen size calculator shows how far a 86" display carries for presentations, touch work and video.

What to plan before installing the RX286-5A

01

Size & sightlines

Measure the longest viewing distance and the clear wall width. Allow for pupils reaching the lower part of the glass, which sits higher on an 86-inch panel than on a smaller one.

02

Mount & connections

Check wall construction, mounting height, power and data, and confirm the mount and any trolley are rated for this size. Agree the delivery route and lifting arrangements before the install date. SMART lists a 800 x 600 mm (M8) VESA pattern.

03

Software & installation

Decide whether lessons run on the built-in iQ system or a connected laptop, and confirm SMART Notebook and account sign-in with your IT team. Tell us if you need mounting, cabling or a camera.

Display price is for the panel. Installation and optional equipment are quoted separately. Purchase-order terms are available to approved education customers.

Build a quote you can compare

Include these details in your project enquiry so the quote covers the room as well as the screen.

  • Number of displays, site postcode and required date.
  • Furthest viewing distance and available wall space.
  • Wall type, fixed mount or adjustable trolley, and cable routes.
  • Laptop model, teaching apps, and any camera or Windows PC needs.

Ask for separate equipment, delivery, installation and licence costs, with a total including VAT. Confirm warranty coverage and any registration requirements before placing the order.

SMART RX286-5A questions answered

Who is the SMART Board RX286 best suited to?

Consider it for a large or deep teaching space, a hall or a lecture room where the furthest pupils are a long way from the board. It is the largest panel in the RX range, so choose it when viewing distance rather than specification is the deciding factor.

Do I need 86 inches, or will a smaller RX do?

Decide by the longest viewing distance and the smallest text people must read from it, not by room capacity. All three RX sizes share the same 3840 x 2160 resolution, so the 86-inch panel makes everything larger rather than sharper. If your back row is close enough to read comfortably on 75 inches, the smaller model saves wall space and cost.

What should I check before an 86-inch display is delivered?

Check the route in and the wall. Confirm that doorways, lifts, stairs and corridors take a panel of this size on its pallet, that the wall construction will take a mount rated for it, and that enough people or a lifting aid are available on the day. Ask us to quote installation if you would rather we handled it.

Does the RX need a computer to work?

No. The iQ system is built into the display, with a whiteboard, browser, screen sharing and the Google Play Store, so it runs lessons on its own. A laptop connects over USB-C or HDMI when you want to teach from your own files, and a Windows OPS module can be fitted in the rear slot for a fixed PC.

Can I connect a laptop with a single USB-C cable?

Yes. The front USB-C port carries video, touch data and up to 65W of power delivery, so one cable connects and charges most laptops. Your laptop and cable must support DisplayPort over USB-C; a laptop needing more than 65W may still need its own charger.

What is Tool Explorer?

Tool Explorer is SMART's object recognition on the RX. The supplied styluses select colours and the erasers work by orientation, and optional stamps and cubes are recognised when placed on the glass, so younger pupils can use physical tools rather than on-screen menus. Stamps and cubes are optional accessories.

How many people can use the RX286 at once?

SMART lists up to 50 touch points, depending on the operating system in use, with pen, finger and eraser told apart at the same time. The width of an 86-inch panel is what makes that useful in practice, since more pupils can stand at the glass together than on a smaller board.

How much power does the RX286 draw?

122W typical in use and under 0.5W on standby, the highest of the three RX sizes. Plan a standard 100V to 240V socket behind the mount position and account for the difference if you are fitting a room full of displays.

Does it include a camera or a Windows PC?

Treat both as separate items. SMART lists its Ultra HD camera and PCM OPS modules as optional accessories, and the display's top USB-C port and rear OPS slot are there to take them. Ask for a quote that names the camera, PC module and mount you need rather than assuming they are included.

Which version of Android does the RX run?

SMART's UK page says units may ship on Android 13 and update to a later version over the air, and the system takes automatic updates in service. Confirm the version installed on your delivery with us if a particular app or policy depends on it.
